Shooting Preparation for Actors, Directors, Authors and Ensembles

The tough competition on the film market requires ever shorter shooting times with highest quality standards. This means that directors have less time on the set to work with actors. A good preparation with a coach can save a lot of shooting time and bring together director and actors in their creativity even before shooting begins. It can clarify questions, backgrounds and motivations, whose discussion on the set in the presence of the entire team costs a lot of time and therefore money.

In our understanding it allows the actor to arrive safely and flexibly in the role, so that s/he has a clear offer, but is flexible enough to react to the director’s suggestions. The basis for any coaching—as it is always a very sensitive and personal matter—is the clear decision of the actor/actress to get involved in the work with the coach and to go on a journey of discovery together.

Jens Roth, who supervised many daily and weekly productions on set between 2005 and 2011, is very familiar with the simultaneous collaboration with director, actors, production and authors. In his opinion, it is extremely meaningful to experience the creation of a role together and to draw together from the emerging abundance of different colours. Directors and authors are therefore warmly welcome.

The  coaching for role finding can take place in the presence of the director or without him/her. If the actor feels more confident in the process alone (especially when working with SourceTuning for the first time), the coaching can be recorded and forwarded to the director for review, so that s/he can make use of the range of possibilities on set.

When working with a coach, ensembles can illuminate and expand the relationships between their characters and build a strong relationship of trust, which gives them great freedom and openness in their dealings with each other on the set. A familiarity can be created that some intense relationships need from the beginning in order to be credible (old friends, enemies, family, etc.).

Role work with SourceTuning can take between 2 and 5 hours depending on the scope and development of the role. When detailed work on the script is desired, the preparation can take between half a day and 3 days, depending on the level of detail and scope.

Offers for castings and rehearsals

The rothraum, home of rothcoaching, offers with its bright rooms and the wide view over Berlin a nice ambience for castings and rehearsals. Besides the spacious and beautiful entrance area with kitchen, which is included in the price, there is a large room with 92 sqm and a small room with 22 sqm, which can be used together or separately. The large room can be almost entirely covered with a carpet, if desired. The rooms can be used with your own equipment of we can take care of everything, including technical support and a cameraman/-woman.

Material development

Already in the phase of material development it can be beneficial for authors and directors to work with a coach, as for example in “My Sisters”by Lars Kraume. Together with leading actresses Jördis Triebel, Nina Kunzendorf and Lisa Hagmeister we used SourceTuning to work on the characters. What Lars Kraume said about the work applied to the actors as well as to the director and the author. By using the imagination of the actors, the authors have the opportunity to tune the roles more precisely to the actors playing them.

Systemic script constellations are another tool in story development that Jens Roth has mastered and that taps into a similarly intuitive and very precise source as SourceTuning. Many years of experience in therapeutic processes with family constellations, the collaboration with Storydocs until 2007, the handling of many strong and weak storylines over his 20 years as coach and his own experiences as director and author have allowed him to develop an instinctive feel for tension and relationships between characters in a story.

Working with a script constellation allows the network of relationships of a story to be felt and experienced almost in 3D via substitutes who do not have to be actors. Authors and directors can communicate directly with their characters. It becomes visible where there are “holes”in the story and where the story has strengths which can be used. Often surprising aspects of the story come to light, which authors can use in the further writing process to make characters more multilayered. Characters can be better understood in their own lives.

Onsetcoaching

On set coaching is possible for every production. However, it requires a high degree of cooperation and harmony between director and coach and a lot of trust on the part of the ensemble. Of course it makes sense when working with laymen and children, or when the director is also playing a leading role, but it can also be useful under high time pressure to relieve the director.
